Reiki Healing

What is Reiki

Reconnect your Body, Mind, Emotions and Spirit with Reiki Healing Energy.

When you slow down, Reiki is the gateway to the wisdom of the Universe. Anyone can have access to this wisdom.

Reiki healing must be experienced in order to be understood. We can read about this amazing healing modality, we can learn the theory, but to truly understand what is Reiki, we must experience it. We must access this wisdom through direct experience.

So, before you even begin to learn what is Reiki, I am going to introduce a basic technique that you can begin to practice immediately.

It is an essential grouding technique, used by Reiki healers and taught to Reiki students during level one course. This grouding technique will connect you with the Earth's energy and with Reiki energy.

  • Sit calmly with your back straight, feet flat on the floor. Your hands on your lap and your eyes closed
  • Feel your breath coming in and out
  • Set an intention for connecting with the Earth's energy
  • Visualize Reiki healing symbol
  • Place your hands on your forehead and the back of your head and send Reiki energy
  • Place your hands over sacrum and send Reiki
  • Place your hands on your knees and send Reiki
  • Place your hands over your feet and send Reiki

Reiki Healing History

Reiki is an ancient healing method that was re-discovered by a Japanese Buddhist and spiritualist, Dr. Mikao Usui at the end of 19th century. Dr. Usui was interested in how people were healed by touch and through his research, meditation, and profound personal experience, he found a 2500 year-old healing technique which he called Reiki.

Dr. Usui experienced a first miracle of Reiki healing when he stabbed his toe on a rock and fell down. He was bleeding and in a lot of pain. Instinctively, he grabbed his toe with both hands and within a few minutes the bleeding stopped and the pain disappeared. This was the first miracle and after this experience, he applied his hands to others and miracles continued to happen.

For the following seven years, Dr. Usui treated many beggars. One day, he noticed that the same familiar faces kept returning to him. He asked them why didn't they change their lives. The answer was that it was easier to go on beginning.

He then had a profound revelation, he realized that healing with Reiki was not enought, he also needed to teach people gratitude.

He thought out 5 Reiki Principles and began teaching them. This was a beginning of his path of travelling across Japan and teaching Reiki.

There are many ways that Reiki today is practiced. In addition to the Reiki training (which in itself can vary), many practitioners develop their own ways of healing and add a variety of elements into the healing session.

For example, practitioners may use or incorporate into the healing session some of the following:

  • crystals, talismans, or the use of a pendulum
  • chakra healing and balancing
  • aura cleansing
  • chanting mantras or using meditation
  • special breathing technique
  • use of spirit guides

While non-traditional, all of these ways are valid. It is our human nature to be creative and innovative.

Reiki healing controversies

If you have been practicing Reiki or learning Reiki for a while, you have noticed that there are some controversies and disagreements over teachings of Reiki. Some Reiki Masters disagree with certain methods of healing and teaching Reiki.

For example, some Reiki Masters regard Reiki Symbols as secret and only to be shared during Reiki initiation. Other Masters (and healers and teachers) hold, that the symbols should be shared for the highest good of humanity and they can be shared freely through media, printed or online.

I agree with sharing. Our society is changing and evolving and so is our consciousness. We need to be flexible, fluid, and open to change. Knowledge is to be shared and passed on. It is to be shared not only with those special ones, who can afford to have an initiation by a Reiki Master, but it is to be shared with anyone who is curious, interested and perhaps wants to help themselves or humanity.

I can understand the other point of view as well. One of the reasons that Reiki teachings have a certain protocol is for credibility. Practitioner credibility is a big challenge, especially in our society where energy healing is viewed with distrust and disbelief.

Certain Masters hold that having established rules and protocol helps to maintain some sense of control over the discipline, giving it a certain level of credibility, understanding, and acceptance in the wider community.

As with everything, there are two sides of coin to any argument and you decide which one fits most with your belief system, your personal ethics, and values.

There is no right or wrong. There is only what feels and is most true for us. What is our intention? What are our values? What do we believe is true? What do we believe is ethical?

Learning to answer questions for ourselves ensures that we live an authentic life. That we are true to ourselves, to who we are, what we believe.

Living an authentic life is part of the magic and mystery of Reiki healing. It is up to each of us to decide what Reiki is or what it is not.
